Responsible Gambling (UK)

CasinoLuck.com is committed to providing accurate information about responsible gambling tools, support services, and harm-prevention resources available to players in the United Kingdom. This page sets out the key organisations, helplines, self-exclusion schemes, and practical measures that form the UK’s responsible gambling framework.

The information below is drawn from regulatory frameworks, legal requirements, and operator-published documentation. We rate from public data and operator terms, not from funded play.

1. The UK regulatory framework

All online gambling operators legally accessible from the United Kingdom must hold a licence issued by the Gambling Commission (UKGC). The UKGC imposes mandatory social responsibility requirements on licensees, including obligations relating to customer interaction, affordability assessments, and the provision of responsible gambling tools. The Gambling Act 2005, as amended by the Gambling Act Review White Paper reforms, provides the statutory basis for these requirements.

2. Recognising problem gambling

Problem gambling can develop gradually and may affect individuals regardless of age, income, or background. Research published by the Gambling Commission indicates that approximately 0.3% of the adult population in Great Britain experiences problem gambling, with a larger proportion affected at moderate-risk levels. Warning signs include spending more time or money than intended, chasing losses, borrowing money to gamble, concealing gambling activity from family or friends, neglecting work or personal responsibilities, and experiencing anxiety, irritability, or sleep disruption related to gambling.

3. National Gambling Helpline, BeGambleAware

The National Gambling Helpline, operated by GamCare and funded by BeGambleAware, provides free, confidential advice and support by telephone on 0808 8020 133. The helpline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trained advisers can discuss your gambling, provide information about treatment options, and refer you to specialist services. Live chat and online forum support are also available through the BeGambleAware website at begambleaware.org.

4. GamCare

GamCare is the leading provider of information, advice, and support for anyone affected by gambling harms in Great Britain. In its 2023-2024 reporting period, GamCare handled 55,228 cases through the National Gambling Helpline, representing a 25% increase year on year. GamCare offers one-to-one counselling sessions, online treatment programmes, chatroom support groups, and a dedicated treatment service for young people. The charity also provides specialist support for family members and friends affected by a loved one’s gambling. Contact GamCare through the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 or at gamcare.org.uk.

5. Gordon Moody

Gordon Moody is a UK charity providing residential treatment and aftercare for individuals with severe gambling disorder. The charity operates two residential treatment centres and offers a range of programmes including retreat and counselling, residential treatment, and aftercare and relapse prevention. Gordon Moody accepts referrals from healthcare professionals, family members, and self-referrals. More information is available at gordonmoody.org.uk.

6. GAMSTOP, national self-exclusion

GAMSTOP is the national online self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. By registering with GAMSTOP, you can exclude yourself from all online gambling operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission for a chosen period of six months, one year, or five years. Over 420,000 people have registered with GAMSTOP since its launch. Once the exclusion is active, operators are legally required to prevent you from depositing, wagering, or receiving marketing communications during the exclusion period. Registration is free and takes approximately five minutes at gamstop.co.uk.

Important: GAMSTOP covers only operators licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. It does not block access to offshore or non-UKGC-licensed sites. If you use sites that are not regulated by the UKGC, GAMSTOP will not prevent you from gambling on those sites. For protection against unlicensed operators, see section 8 below on blocking software.

7. Practical responsible gambling tools

All UKGC-licensed operators are required to offer a standard set of responsible gambling tools. These include deposit limits that allow you to cap the amount you can deposit over daily, weekly, or monthly periods; reality checks that display a pop-up notification showing time spent and net position after a configurable interval; time-out periods that suspend your account for between 24 hours and six weeks; full self-exclusion as an alternative to or in conjunction with GAMSTOP; and access to your full account and transaction history. Using these tools does not require interacting with customer support; they are typically available directly in the account settings area of each operator’s platform.

8. Blocking software, Gamban and GamBlock

Blocking software provides a device-level barrier to gambling sites that GAMSTOP does not cover, including offshore and unlicensed operators. Gamban is a cross-platform application that blocks access to thousands of gambling websites and apps on your devices. A single licence covers all your devices and costs approximately GBP25 per year. GamBlock provides a similar service with additional features including automated updates and tamper detection. BetBlocker is a free alternative that offers configurable blocking periods. These tools are complementary to GAMSTOP: GAMSTOP prevents licensed operators from serving you, while blocking software prevents your devices from reaching gambling sites at all.

9. Underage gambling prevention

This site is intended for users aged 18+ and above. Underage gambling is prohibited.

Gambling by individuals under the age of 18 is illegal in the United Kingdom. All UKGC-licensed operators are required to verify the age and identity of their customers before allowing deposits or gambling activity. CasinoLuck.com is intended exclusively for users aged 18 and over. Parents and guardians are advised to use parental control software and device-level restrictions to prevent access to gambling sites by minors. Organisations offering support specifically for young people affected by gambling include GamCare’s Youth Outreach programme and the National Gambling Helpline.

10. Support for families and affected others

Gambling harms extend beyond the individual who gambles. Partners, children, parents, and friends can experience significant financial, emotional, and psychological effects. GamCare provides dedicated support for affected others, including one-to-one counselling, online support groups, and a telephone helpline. Gam-Anon UK offers peer support groups for family members and friends of people with gambling problems, operating on the same Twelve Step model as Gamblers Anonymous. The National Gambling Helpline (0808 8020 133) is available to affected others, not only to those who gamble themselves.

  • MoneyHelper: moneyhelper.org.uk. Free, impartial financial guidance including debt advice for those affected by gambling-related financial difficulty.

If you are concerned about your gambling or someone else’s, call the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133. The call is free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day.

12. Slot stake limits

Since May 2025, the UK Gambling Commission has enforced statutory stake limits on online slot games. The maximum stake per spin is GBP2 for players aged 18 to 24 and GBP5 for players aged 25 and over. These limits apply to all online slot products offered by UKGC-licensed operators. The limits are designed to reduce the speed and scale of losses on the highest-intensity gambling product and to narrow the disparity between online and land-based stake restrictions.

13. Affordability checks

UKGC-licensed operators are required to conduct financial risk assessments on their customers. Light-touch affordability checks are triggered when a player’s net loss reaches GBP125 within a rolling 30-day period or GBP500 within a rolling 365-day period. Enhanced financial vulnerability checks apply at higher thresholds. These checks are designed to identify customers who may be at risk of gambling-related financial harm without creating excessive friction for the majority of players. The thresholds and methodology are set by the UKGC and are subject to periodic review.

14. Gambling and mental health

Problem gambling is recognised as a mental health condition by the National Health Service and the World Health Organization. The NHS Northern Gambling Service operates specialist clinics offering treatment for gambling disorder, with locations across England. Referrals can be made by a GP, another healthcare professional, or through self-referral. The NHS also provides a dedicated gambling addiction support page at nhs.uk, which includes a self-assessment tool and a directory of local treatment services.

Problem gambling is treatable, and recovery is possible with appropriate support. The resources listed on this page are free at the point of use and are available regardless of whether you have previously sought help.
